In the beginning

0 & 1

Everything known is built from two opposites.

nothing and something

01

Zero and one

Begin with the smallest possible difference: nothing and something. Off and on. No mark and a mark. There is nothing simpler, and nothing else is needed — every other thing on this page is made out of these two.

02

A combination of zeros and ones becomes binary code

One mark alone says almost nothing. Put eight of them in a row and the row itself starts to carry meaning — not because any single digit changed, but because of the order they are in. Combination is where information begins.

03

Binary code becomes numbers — and letters

Read that row as a quantity and you get a number. Read it as a symbol and you get a letter. The same eight marks are both at once; only the way you read them decides which.

Combinations become values and words

Now combine again. Numbers combined become values; letters combined become words. Four letters — thirty‑two zeros and ones — and you are holding the oldest word in scripture.

His own binary alphabet — A = 01000001, T = 01010100. The values are exact.
05

Words become sentences. Sentences become information.

Words set beside other words become sentences; sentences become an account of something. And so a combination of zeros and ones — through words, through sentences — becomes information. Nothing was added along the way but arrangement.

The second group, 00100000, is not a letter — it is the space character (the number 32). Even the gap between two words has to be written down as a number, which is the same point Chapter II makes about zero being “the gap between the dots in Morse code.”

06

And combinations become value — from zero to infinity

Read the same marks as quantity and there is no ceiling. Add a digit and the count doubles; keep adding and the zeros and ones will name any number that has ever existed. Two symbols reach every value between 0 and ∞.
